Cradled in a valley between the Rocky Mountains, the Monashee Mountains and the Cariboo Mountains, the friendly village of Valemount is itself nestled at the foot of Canoe Mountain and is the Thompson's most northerly town. Valemount is the home of Mount Robson, at 3,954 metres the highest peak in the Rockies and the origin of the mighty Fraser River. The Fraser accessible for canoeing, kayaking, rafting, and fishing. In August, Chinook salmon return almost the entire length of the Fraser River to spawn in Swift Creek. The annual miracle of the Chinook salmon's life cycle can be viewed from the George Hicks Regional Park at Valemount. Join guides on a leisurely walk through the R.W. Starratt Wildlife Sanctuary, one of Canada`s best birding locations. This very important wetland is home to over 140 different species of birds and is located directly in the path of a major migration route for many birds that travel south for the winter. Along with the amazing amount of birds, the wetland is home to many large mammals. Moose, beaver, coyote, fox and black bears are just some of the animals that make the Sanctuary their home. Described as `a wilderness paradise in the purest, most natural sense`. Valemount has all the services and accommodations necessary for visitors, and serves as a nice base camp for those planning to heli-hike, horseback ride, raft, canoe or take a guided nature tour. Local business and government recently cooperated to build 2 attractive new viewing platforms connected by an existing trail across a dike. A second walking trail to the Wildlife Sanctuary is being developed. Only 18 km (12 mi.) away is Kinbasket Lake marina and campsite. Superb fishing for trout, kokanee and dolly varden can be expected at this lake. Hiking trails vary from the famous Berg Lake Trail in Mount Robson Park to footpaths through the jackpines. Outdoor winter recreation includes skiing, snowmobiling, dogsledding. Groomed snowmobile and cross-country ski trails abound in the area. Recreation facilities include three baseball diamonds, a newly refurbished ice arena, curling rink, two tennis courts, a community hall and several children`s playground areas. A true valley for all seasons, with spectacular scenery and unlimited adventures are waiting for the outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy.
